I recently had a conversation with a music genius and minister that I highly respect. As we were chatting about an upcoming music event, she mentioned that one topic we were lacking in church music was heaven. There just aren’t many songs about heaven out there, and even fewer being used in the church.
Somehow, the focus has shifted. Rather than singing a lot about looking forward to Jesus coming soon to take us to heaven, we are singing about getting heaven to come down where we are. There are quite a few songs about heaven being on earth, but are we still looking for the day when we’ll be in heaven with Him?
If the church has heaven on their mind and sense of urgency about the return of Jesus, would there be a shift in the atmosphere?
Would our actions, words, and lifestyles change?
There is so much going on in our world right now that I can’t help but believe that Jesus is coming soon. Yet, there are so many people walking away from the truth.
Maybe it’s time that the church is reminded that Jesus is coming soon for a spotless bride.
As singers and musicians, we have the opportunity to put a message into the hearts of people and words on their lips. The lyrics that are sung at each service and event go home with those who hear and sing along. So, I’m challenging songwriters (including myself!) to write more about heaven and getting ready for our soon-coming King. I’m challenging music directors, worship leaders, and choir directors to start singing these songs more often.
We want to be ready when He comes and I believe He’s coming soon!
